About Me
I have been interested in human emotions, behaviours and the way we relate to each other since I was a child and have been studying the various theories of the human psyche since the late 60s.
I trained as a couple counsellor at Relate in 1990 and I worked there until 2002. Completely captivated by the tenacity and courage of my clients, I continued working, training and studying in various techniques so that I could offer the best tools for each unique individual who came to see me. I am still studying and training in new techniques as they are being developed.
I worked for some years on the integration of anti-discriminating practices into the professional standards of NVQs in Advice, Guidance, Counselling and Psychotherapy in order to protect and respect members of minority groups whether clients or practitioners.
Integrating Theories
I went on to study at Metanoia Institute where I combined Analytic and Psychodynamic theories Object Relation theories, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Person Centred, Gestalt, Existential, Transpersonal and Developmental theories and Neuroscience. I was awarded a distinction in Integrative Psychotherapy at MSc level through Middlesex University.
My study of neuroscience gave me an insight into how big and small traumas affect the brain and the mind. This led to my interest in finding ways of actively treating trauma through Eye Movement Desensitization and Recovery (EMDR) with pleasing results. This fairly new technique is establishing itself and expanding all the time through innovative Psychotherapists finding ways of speeding up treatment of even the most subtle of developmental traumas that continue to cause problems.
Since then I have trained and assisted teaching at the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute in Parts I and II. This is a fabulous and subtle technique that addresses traumatic memories that are held in the body and helps to release and integrate them to relieve symptoms in a gentle way.
In order to support myself and my practice, I have 2 supervisors from different orientations and I belong to a group of senior psychotherapists. I am also a supervisor to other counsellors and psychotherapists teaching an integration of all of the techniques that I have learned over three decades.
Professional Registration
I am accredited with Relate, Metanoia Institute and United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapsts (UKCP), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute, United Kingdom Association for Psychotherapy Integration (UKAPI), and EMDR UK and Ireland.
